BLINDSPOT

EXHIBITION BY NICOLE CHOCHREK

AT THE CENTER FOR EXPLORATORY AND PERCEPTUAL ARTS
IN THE FLUX GALLERY, BUFFALO, NY.

BLINDSPOT explores visual and optical illusions as metaphors for how dyslexics can process text. Illusions allow us to visualize different interpretations of information. As a dyslexic, my work reflects difficulties in processing text by expanding the visual possibilities of language. This work celebrates the dyslexic strengths of pattern recognition and spatial awareness to extend perspectives and challenge ideas of correctness.

Title: WASHOUT, 2018
Medium: Glass, water, acrylic
Additions: 1
Description:

WASHOUT is a simulation of the washout effect. A visual distortion of text caused by dyslexia. This is when text can appear blurred or indistinct, triggering many dyslexics to guess words instead of reading them. Italic lettering and serif fonts can make it harder to read and were deliberately chosen to obscure the text further. When standing directly in front of the work the word, WASHOUT fades, creating a blindspot.

Title: Whose Game Is It Anyway, 2024
Medium: Pictionary cards
Additions: 2
Description:

I’ve always wanted to play Pictionary, but as a dyslexic, I’ve never enjoyed word games. You don’t need to read to create patterns. This work alters the game to create visual illusions of movement. Dyslexics may avoid reading because it’s uncomfortable and difficult to process. Inspiration was drawn from Prince, who once said, “Imagine what we’d all be like in our own game.”

Price: $3200 Each

Title: Disassociated Forms, 2024
Medium: 35mm slides, letraset, acrylic, archival print.
Additions: 10
Description:

This work creates a visual disconnect between the sound, the writing, and the image of a word. These layers allow us to see the extent of interpretations and translations that occur when using language to describe the physical world. A process dyslexics are often hyper-aware of because of difficulties. The images are of 35mm photographs my grandfather took in the 1960s. The fragmented letters and phonetic spellings challenge the acceptable standards to find a continuity compatible with the dyslexic experience.

Price: $1200 Each

Title: Forward, 2024
Medium: Felt
Additions: 1
Description:

Forward is an optical illusion of the greater than symbol formed by the letter “F.” As a dyslexic, it visually states that I am greater than my weaknesses. It demonstrates direction and symbolizes progress. Constructed from a single letter, it alchemizes a fragment of my struggle into a strength. It shows how position dictates our perception of reality. It illustrates the importance of big-picture thinking. And is a manifestation; onward and upward.

Price: $4100
